June 2008 – Molto bravo to Ferragamo and Brazilian Touch, winners of first annual Soccer for Peace Cup!!(click here for photos)Held on June 21st 2008, the Soccer for Peace Cup brought together 32 teams in a colorful and often intense competition held in Manhattan. Corporate teams (Google, Paul Weiss, Adidas, Modell's, etc) played against recreational sides, with all proceeds supporting Soccer for Peace's work in the Middle East. Alex Fyfe served as Tournament Chair, planning and executing every facet of the day. Said Alex: "It's so rewarding to see this come to life. We've been planning the Soccer for Peace Cup for months, not only as a fundraising tool but a logistical exercise. It went off perfectly, which makes me that much happier given it was the first year." In sum, over 300 players participated, contributing over $50,000 to the organization. Several news outlets including NBC and Fox News also took notice, covering the tournament in various media.
The Soccer for Peace Cup was part of Soccer for Peace's spring 2008 fundraising drive. Several nights earlier, on Thursday June 19th, the organization held its annual benefit at Chelsea Piers. Over 250 individuals showed their support, including US soccer legend Claudio Reyna, MLS Chairman Don Garber and US Soccer President Sunil Gulati. According to Zachary Viders, a Soccer for Peace board member and former collegiate player, "the organization is in a great place right now. We provide programming of the highest quality, which is purely enabled by our supporters' generosity. And as a soccer player myself, I was thrilled to participate in the first annual Soccer for Peace Cup. This will become New York's definitive soccer championship, and it will grow every year that it's held." Preparations are already underway for 2009.
